Letter to the Senator

Dear Senator %^&#(*^_,

While I can appreciate your desire to network away from DC or Pennsylvania (Ed: The fucker was with the Koch Bros), now is not the time to do it. Your staff is overwhelmed, no one answers phones or emails or anything else – and it is NOT the fault of your constituents.   The Powers That Be know that there will be so many things to have to pay attention to, and they are not just doing it to the taxpayers of this country, of Pennsylvania. They are doing it to YOU, sir, and you are not standing up for us in return.

We all know that what has been going on the last 10 days are NOT how government is supposed to work.  30 Executive orders in 10 days?  You know it, and so do we.   You have left us, however, to fend for ourselves, and it does not seem that you are on our side as much as you might think you are.

Parents notice when our children’s medical insurance is threatened.  We notice when our children with disabilities are threatened with becoming “pre-existing conditions” – and please don’t say, HE didn’t want that.  Yes, he did.   We notice when people with absolutely not one lick of public school experience are being shoved down our throats to become “education secretary”.   Taxpayers notice when lawmakers compare people pre-existing conditions (which Includes people with disabilities) to "burned-down houses."

That, by the way, was about as undignified a comparison as I have ever heard coming from a lawmaker.  I am ashamed to say I live in Pennsylvania, and that you are our Senator.  And I do think that you owe the disability community an apology.

I have an adult son with autism.  He gets No services whatsoever.  However, he is good at learning - he is a graduate of XXX University, was an intern at the Smithsonian this past fall, and is now a grad student at XOXO University of PA.  But he Needs Supports in order to live independently.  And yes, he votes.  With block grants, the likelihood of his being able to ever get services is close to nil, and there will always be people who appear to need them more (invisible disabilities are like that). We parents are not getting any younger; my husband has been retired for 14 years.

In addition, when the Medicaid block grants come through, and children with multiple disabilities who cost twice what the cap is end up becoming adults who cost twice what the cap is, those “burning down houses” will be smack on your doorstep.  And their voting parents will not be happy.

Taxpayers notice when the people they hire do not do their jobs.   You were hired to represent US.  You were hired to do a job for US.  Pennsylvanians.   It does not matter the party, whether rich or poor.  If you do not want to do that job, then please relinquish your seat and allow us to elect to someone who does.

Please, Senator &^($_^%@.  WORK FOR US.   Vote NO on DeVos.  Vote NO on Sessions, too - he did, after all, call our disabled children “IRRITATING.”    How worthy, how dignified, how considerate.

Stealth Staffage

How fun is this? Someone in the White House is squealing on El Orange....well, they were, until the account went poof....

On Wednesday, a twitter account was briefly active before being shut down. The tweeter, @WhiteHouseLeak, is an anonymous mid-level staffer in the West Wing of the White House, who described a chaotic atmosphere, a demoralized staff, and an unfocused and irrational President incapable of processing information. The staffer is a Republican who apparently worked on the Trump campaign, but is now thoroughly disillusioned by what has been going on. During his brief presence he was tweeting to real reporters, including Fox News and the New York Daily News.
It is impossible to know if the leaker shuttered the account himself or was outed.

They will not be the last, I'm sure.  Lots of people are freaked, it seems.

Roll Call

Below is a post that has been going around the Facebook feeds.  Someone is keeping a tally.  It does not include today....

Those who study authoritarian regimes suggest keeping a list of  abnormal events after a demagogue is elected, as a way to remind  yourself that this isn't normal and to keep from being overwhelmed into  acceptance by the onslaught of attacks on our rights.

Here is a list below. We are 4 days in.

As the author says, "when you see all of this in one list, it is easy  to get overwhelmed, at first-- it is also easy to see a pattern and to  finally, finally recognize that none of this is normal, nor is it ok."

 * On January 19th, 2017, DT said that he would cut funding for the DOJ’s Violence Against Women programs.

 * On January 20th, 2017, DT ordered all regulatory powers of all federal agencies frozen.
 * On January 20th, 2017, DT ordered the National Parks Service to stop  using social media after RTing factual, side by side photos of the  crowds for the 2009 and 2017 inaugurations.
 * On January 20th, 2017,  roughly 230 protestors were arrested in DC and face unprecedented  felony riot charges. Among them were legal observers, journalists, and  medics.
 * On January 20th, 2017, a member of the International  Workers of the World was shot in the stomach at an anti-fascist protest  in Seattle. He remains in critical condition.

 * On January 21st,  2017, DT brought a group of 40 cheerleaders to a meeting with the CIA to  cheer for him during a speech that consisted almost entirely of framing  himself as the victim of dishonest press.
 * On January 21st, 2017,  White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer held a press conference largely  to attack the press for accurately reporting the size of attendance at  the inaugural festivities, saying that the inauguration had the largest  audience of any in history, “period.”

 * On January 22nd, 2017, White  House advisor Kellyann Conway defended Spicer’s lies as “alternative  facts” on national television news.

  * On January 23rd, 2017, it was announced that the man who shot the  anti-fascist protester in Seattle was released without charges, despite  turning himself in.

 * On January 24th, 2017, Spicer reiterated the lie that 3-5 million people voted “illegally” thus costing DT the popular vote.
  * On January 24th, 2017, DT tweeted a picture from his personal Twitter  account of a photo he says depicts the crowd at his inauguration and  will hang in the White House press room. The photo is of the 2009  inauguration of 44th President Barack Obama, and is curiously dated  January 21st, 2017, the day AFTER the inauguration and the day of the  Women’s March, the largest inauguration related protest in history.
 *  On January 24th, 2017, the EPA was ordered to stop communicating with  the public through social media or the press and to freeze all grants  and contracts.
 * On January 24th, 2017, the USDA was ordered to stop  communicating with the public through social media or the press and to  stop publishing any papers or research. All communication with the press  would also have to be authorized and vetted by the White House.
 *  On January 24th, 2017, HR7, a bill that would prohibit federal funding  not only to abortion service providers, but to any insurance coverage,  including Medicaid, that provides abortion coverage, went to the floor  of the House for a vote.
 * On January 24th, 2017, Director of the  Department of Health and Human Service nominee Tom Price characterized  federal guidelines on transgender equality as “absurd.”

Call. NOW.

To my Republican teacher friends.... I know that some of you do not like DeVos, I have talked to you. If you really understand what she could do to public education, you HAVE to call Toomey's office THIS WEEK. If you don't understand, read up on it. If you think this is only going to affect city schools, Think Again. You're ALL toast.

Music and arts programs will be the FIRST to go bye-bye. All that money they lose from vouchers will come out of what is seen as the "least important" classes. They're going to block grant Medicaid, so the districts will not be able to bill for special ed services (parents won't let them because of caps). Those services cost $$$$ and are federal law, and they will have to come up with the money from somewhere. Guess Where??? To my classroom teacher friends - they don't care about your planning period during General Music class. They don't care about unions as it is.

YES, there is someone better out there. I personally don't know any on your side of the aisle, but I would hope there would plenty from whom they could pick. That TPTB picked an uneducated half-illiterate (see English teacher Twitter markup) Amway sales multi-billionaire tells ya something - that they don't care a whit about public education.

Pennsyltuckians - Pat Toomey wants to be re-elected in 6 years. Would you vote for him if he votes with her? Unless you hit the lottery and can afford private school, your grandchildren will be subject to the fallout. Good luck with that. CALL TOOMEY'S office before the 31st. If a mailbox is full, call the next one on the list. He has EIGHT.

Those of you from other states, do the same for your own Republican senators.

Lying Liars

Ya know, if my kid gave me "alternative facts", he'd be up shit's creek....or I'd be a grandma....

On Meet the Press this morning, talking about Sean Spicer's first time out....

"Why put him out there for the very first time, in front of that podium, to utter a provable falsehood? Chuck Todd asked Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president. "It's a small thing, but the first time he confronts the public, it's a falsehood?
After some tense back and forth, Conway offered this:
Don't be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck. You're saying it's a falsehood, and they're giving -- our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that. But the point really is --
At this point, a visibly exasperated Todd cut in. "Wait a minute. Alternative facts!? Alternative facts!? Four of the five facts he uttered ... were just not true. Alternative facts are not facts; they're falsehoods."
"Fake news" is so yesterday. "Alternative facts" is where it's at now.

I watched the whole conversation.  It was AWFUL, I felt for Chuck Todd - which is not normally the case.  And I wanted the question answered, too!

WHO THE FUCK THINKS UP A TERM LIKE "ALTERNATIVE FACTS"???????  WHO???

Is there a way, feasibly, that the entire press (save Faux, of course) can just NOT TALK TO THIS WOMAN?  NOT give Trump any press?   Just freaking STOP?

Not giving it to #SewerRatBarbie would be easy enough.  The rest, ok, but maybe it's time "freedom of the press" started to include "freedom FROM the bullshit."

No DC for Moi

Ok, well.....Hub didn't want me to go.  Swat teams, riot police and all that.   And that I have had a looooong week.  My friends are there, and they said that they could not get close to the train from RFK to the rally, the lines were hours long.

So they walked the two miles, which, at this point, Moi could not have done.

Thought about going to Lancaster or Philly.  Decided not to.  Things like this are not fun by yourself.  I live in Republicanland.....

At Least They Didn't Shout.....

Ah, but they did.

It's louder on the Stern link.

Well, at least they didn't say, "Howard Stern's penis."

Song for the Hour

Is it Thursday or Friday?

I don't even know.  I have to check.  Honestly, the move - which took a few days and is totally in another world from this area - has me inside out.  So my brains are just now starting to come back.

I don't know if you saw the pre-inaugural "concert" - a lot of people are boycotting all TV (Moi, just the inaugural day...).  But, since the military bands are FORCED to play these things, I watch, for them.

OMG I have never seen anything SO BAD in my life.  NOT the military bands.  The....other shit.  Plain old shit.

Where did this Ravidrums come from?  Pounding noise, lousy technique.  Sounded like a high school marching band drummer.   I wanted SO MUCH for the concert band drummers to go to his set and WAIL

This tweet was pretty appropriate...

It should have been Happy Hour.....anyone standing there sure as hell needed a drink.  And the Trump family looked disinterested as hell.  This is them around the same time that tweet was posted......looked like this every time the camera pointed their way....

Gimme a Break.

This week we moved Bug into his grad school apartment.  While we were doing that, the DeVos hearings..........pretty much taking over my brain............

It is so overwhelming, I don't even know where to start.   So I'll just let my friend Lisa over at A Day in Our Shoes explain for me - even just in part - how incompetent and unqualified DeVos is....

  • Senator Franken asked her about proficiency vs. growth, in measuring children and education. It was clear that she has no idea about the concept.
  • Senator Kaine asked her about holding ALL schools accountable, and she would not commit to hold all schools that receive public funding to accountability.
  • The Senator from Alaska asked about rural students and school choice, and brought up that some rural students just are not going to have the same school choice as other states. Gave a very non-committal answer and commended Alaska on their innovative thinking.
  • Would not commit to keeping guns out of schools, or keeping schools as Gun Free Zones. Because, grizzly bears. You might need a gun on the premises to shoot a grizzly bear. (can’t make this up!)
  • Would not commit to keeping funding of education at current levels or say for sure that she would not defund public education. In fact, she said she open to the idea of defunding public schools and privatizing them.
  • Would not commit to enforcing rules already in place regarding campus rapes.
  • Admitted she has no real knowledge of college funding
Of course, I always wanted someone who knows nothing about student loans in charge of a what, $3 trillion debt?  And WHO THE FUCK INVOLVED WITH EDUCATION DOESN'T KNOW ALL THE HOOEY ABOUT STANDARDIZED TESTING????

One of these days I will be able to think, in order to write a real post on this shit.

And I did contact both Toomey's and Casey's office about her, too.  Even after our visits last week. So I am doing my lobbying part.

It's just .... too much.

In other news, the pre-inaugural concert was more like CRAPPY HOUR.   Next post....

Oh, Those Golden.....wait...

Ooops.  Maybe he really wanted Mummers....

#NotMyPEEotus.

The big fucking mess keeps getting bigger and bigger. And more fucked.

Paul Krugman doesn't think there will be a replacement for the ACA.  Of course, I agree iwth him that it should have been single payer.

The thing is, what can anyone really do about any of this?  The perp perv is elected.  The sheeple are finding out how they were conned, slowly.  WHY should we be stuck with either him or his VP pick, if the election was totally hacked?

Comey needs to be thrown in jail.  And throw away the fucking key.

John Lewis doesn't consider Trump to be a legitimate president, and neither do I.

Next week ought to be good.  Outside of the fact that we will be moving Bug into his grad school apartment, I am hoping that the DeVos hearings either fall through or get put off again, long enough for someone to find something to decimate her pitch with.

On the 20th, we are telling everyone - Turn every TV in your house ON, to a channel which does not have the inauguration or anything else related on.   TCM has no commercials, HGTV is a good bet, too.  This will take ratings away from #NotMyPEEotus.

And yes, Moi will be at the march in DC.  Waiting for them to gas us.....

No Sheet.

I mean, we KNEW this.

In addition to doing this nonfavor to autistic people by way of coying a relationship with RFK, Jr., Trump is coming at the autistic community on its flanks. His nominee for attorney general, Jeff Sessions, thinks that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act "undermines the educational process," and he shows a clear ignorance of this and other federal protections for disabled children in the classroom. Based on Sessions' own comments, if he had his way, these protections would be gutted or ignored, leaving autistic students and other disabled children warehoused and isolated, treated like second-class citizens or worse. Trump's choice for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, is no fan of public schools, the only place where students with disabilities can receive their federally mandated educational rights.s

Not to mention Medicaid and block grants, ACA and other health care, mental health, privacy.....

And make no mistake. My focus is on autism and has been for a long time. But if it can happen to autistic people because of their disabilities, it can happen to you because the odds are high that you or someone you love will be disabled in your lifetime. So if Donald Trump is coming for autistics, don't look away. He's coming for you or someone you love, too.

I love that Emily works for Forbes.  The 1% SO need to hear this stuff.

Hear Ye.

Yesterday, two advocate friends and I went to DC to the SCOTUS Endrew hearing.  For those who don't know, they had a hearing determining what FAPE really is.   We were so lucky to get in and see most of it.  Transcript is here -

After the hearing, we went to visit our Senators’ offices.  We have one Dem and one Rep senator each.  The Republican side of the aisle told us he sincerely had NO IDEA about many of the disability education issues that we spoke of.  This person is the *education specialist* for the senator’s office.   The few things he did have an idea about, he said he would not comment on until after the change in power.   But he was honest – and he was a very nice guy, he did not push back like so many aides do to people with issues from the other side of the aisle.  He was very interested in what we had to say, and said to us, “This is all news to me.  No one has ever come to us with this kind of information.”

What did we talk about?   Well….and this list is Not in its entirety…..

We talked about IDEA reauthorization, and the possible deletion of procedural safeguards that give us the only protection we have.

We talked about the fact that Medicaid (MA) is billed by schools for services that many students receive during the school day.

We talked about what would happen to students with disabilities if Medicaid were subject to block grants, and how in addition to the above, many people will not be able to afford to essentials such as care or meds for their children or family members, because the caps being tossed around are much too low.  And, that there are children who will literally DIE because their parents cannot afford the meds.

We talked about how and why many parents aren’t *able* to come to them and talk about the issues that affect them.

We talked about charter schools, how they don’t give children with disabilities a choice; how their lottery systems fail children with disabilities; how, while they may help city schools to a point (60% of Philly’s charters being investigated for fraud notwithstanding), they would financially destroy many rural districts in the state that have no businesses to rely on for tax support.

We talked about school choice, and how the $5500 vouchers (that number was a quote from one of the people we saw – so they must know something) cannot remotely begin to pay for $25,000+ a year schools, how taking this money from the public school system will decimate public school districts that never did have a problem with supporting kids with disabilities, how there are many ways that vouchers can be taken by citizens now who you would not even think of offhand.  It just would never occur to you.  And every family that takes vouchers takes funding away from children with disabilities.

Some of those families of the disabled think charters are the answer to their prayers.  Most of the families I know who have sent their children to charter have eventually regretted it.  While it is a band aid sometimes, in the end, there ends up being a

Note:  Personally, I live in Amish country.   In a nutshell: These families, with 8-9-10 kids each, could very feasibly take $40-55,000 A YEAR out of the public school tax coffers – to go to their free Amish Schools, or their tuition-based Mennonite schools.  They already go to them anyway, but that money is still in the district coffers (unless Greenspace).  But, now, take that number by hundreds of families.  This will affect hundreds of rural school districts in Pennsylvania.   Can your district afford to lose this?  Mine can't.    Can the districts afford to pay for more busing?   Mine can't.  And yes, busing is feasible - Amish *do ride in “other people’s” cars….  We are talking Millions more dollars….

We talked about a lot more than this, spent over an hour with each office.   They were GOOD conversations.

But the fact that the Aide did not know so much about of what we were talking about tells me a lot.   That's what upsets me the most.  It is not the Aide's fault, either.

It tells me that too many people who will sit here and sign petitions online – petitions they will NEVER see - have probably never sat down even once and called their office closest to them, and made an appointment to visit, or written a letter.   GET OFF YOUR BEHINDS.

It tells me that people who live within driving distance of DC with the same concerns have never been to their offices.   GET OFF YOUR BEHINDS.

Lazy advocacy sucks.   Parents, be diligent.   There is NO guarantee that your child will have services, while young, or when they grow up.

One other thing....I don’t know how the communication between offices works.  Our state is big enough that each of the two senators has **eight** offices!!!   If someone went to one local office with concerns, I don’t know if the person they spoke to relayed the information to the other aides in the other offices – sometimes the aides travel between them - or how long between when the visit occurs and when the rep/sen finds out.   They are *supposed to relay concerns to the government official, but when things are hectic, I would think it may not get there. So, to Moi, it is worth it to make the effort to visit DC if you are within driving distance.

No More Allagash!

My husband will be crushed, once I tell him about this.  I know he will boycott.   LL Bean is the only place he buys his pants....

A pro-Trump political group founded by L.L. Bean heiress Linda Bean wants to switch its registration in order to raise unlimited funds, after federal regulators warned Bean that she had made excessive contributions to the group.
Bean's group, Making Maine Great Again, was limited to accepting individual contributions of $5,000 in a single year— and Bean contributed $60,000, according to a Wednesday letter from the Federal Election Commission obtained by the Associated Press.
The group spent $66,862 supporting Republican Donald Trump's presidential campaign in Maine, where the president-elect won one out of the state's four electoral votes.
The FEC letter says the group, known officially as Making America Great Again LLC, could face punitive action or an audit if it doesn't respond.

Not a Year. No.

It still does not seem real, that we lost David Bowie a year ago today.  That this song was released a few days before he died is just as unreal.

They say now that he only found out he was terminal three months before he died.  The Lazarus video was already sad, much less creepy.....this news just makes it even more so.

What a talent to lose.  Cancer sucks.

Meryl Wins.

Update:  Pot stirred, Trumplethinskin rants about Hollywood, calls her over-rated....his jealousy is showing....I mean, she has something like 160 awards, and he has, what, 6 bankruptcies?

So anyway, Some days, it's just this.

Today, I pissed off a racist on Facebook.

Someone in a genealogy thread (of all places) starts ranting about "why didn't she mention the teenager who was recently abused in Chicago" - and of course, Moi being a stickler for sticking to the point, tells them that Ms. Streep was entirely right.  She was On Topic - considering that the Globes = Hollywood Foreign Press = Reporters....  Of course, she COULD have mentioned the Chicago teen, right after the part where she talked about bad behavior trickling down....

Well, that got the troll mad, who eventually started calling Obama an animal....it was a matter of minutes before everyone in the place jumped on her racist ass.  The conservatives in the thread tucked their tails and left her to the masses.  It was fun.

And she blocked me.  So I can't even screenshot her comments for you.  Which I would do, because racists need to be outed.

Off to DC Again....

.....But this time, for the SCOTUS hearing on FAPE.... and we're going to see a couple of, um, senators that day as well.....

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act gives federal funds to states that agree to offer a “free appropriate public education” (FAPE) to children with disabilities. An important part of providing a FAPE is the IEP, or individualized education program, which – among other things – must set forth a plan that is tailored to the unique needs of each child with a disability. In 1982, the Supreme Court ruled in Board of Education v. Rowley that an IEP must be “reasonably calculated to enable the child to receive educational benefits.”
Next week, the court will hear oral argument in the case of a Colorado boy who has asked the justices to clarify exactly what kind of “educational benefits” an IEP must provide: Is it enough that the benefit is simply non-trivial, or does the IDEA require more? The boy and his family argue that a greater benefit is required, and that a ruling to the contrary will directly affect the quality of the education that is offered to millions of children with disabilities. But the school district where the boy attended school counters that imposing the kind of specific standard proposed by the boy and his family will create its own set of difficulties, including entangling courts in complicated inquiries that they are not qualified to undertake.

The Bern Doesn't Stop in VT.

Ya know, VT has a new Republican governor.....so other states are benefiting from Bernie's ideas....

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo will announce a plan Tuesday morning to offer free tuition at state colleges to hundreds of thousands of middle- and low-income New Yorkers, seizing on a popular liberal talking point on the eve of national Republican ascension.
Under the governor’s plan, any college student who has been accepted to a state or city university in New York — including two-year community colleges — will be eligible provided they or their family earn $125,000 or less annually.
Feel the Bern, New York.

Wednesday, January 4, 2017

He's Da Man.

Feel the Bern, bitches.

To help demonstrate his point that Donald Trump promised not to cut Medicare and Medicaid benefits, Bernie decided that perhaps his argument could best be made with Trump’s own words. Or own characters, as it were.
The tweet dates from May of 2015 and proclaimed, “I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. Huckabee copied me.”
Bernie said that if Trump plans to cut Medicare or Medicaid that he should just admit now that he was lying.
“Millions of people voted for him on the belief that he would keep his word,” Sanders said on the Senate floor, referring to Trump’s promises during the election campaign.
“If he was sincere, then I would hope that tomorrow or maybe today he could send out a tweet and tell his Republican colleagues to stop wasting their time and all of our time. And for Mr. Trump to tell the American people that he will veto any proposal that cuts Medicare, that cuts Medicaid or that cuts Social Security.”

Heh.

And Then This Happened.

So, even if congressfools are raping kids, they can no longer call the cops on them.....

House Republicans, defying their top leaders, voted Monday to significantly curtail the power of an independent ethics office set up in 2008 in the aftermath of corruption scandals that sent three members of Congress to jail.
The move to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics was not public until late Monday, when Representative Robert Goodlatte, Republican of Virginia and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced that the House Republican Conference had approved the change with no advance public notice or debate.

I think I need to go into hibernation.  Someone please let me know when four years are up...

Update:  I guess someone got through to them?

Don't Mock Him!

What a bigly whiner.

“Everything he does right now, he gets — he speaks for the head of Sprint, gets 5,000 jobs moved from abroad,” Spicer continued. “And everyone starts to mock him.”
That’s the thing, though – we mock Trump because he completely lied about those Sprint jobs. We wouldn’t be skewering him if he actually was responsible for saving those jobs – but he’s not.
Um, Duh?

I am so glad that all I see is KITTENS when I pull up a link with his photograph.
